Many people are aware that too much salt can be bad for your health. But why exactly?

Sodium is an essential mineral, vital for numerous biochemical processes and fluid balance within the body, so why is it associated with health problems? The problem, like many things, lies in the quantity which it is consumed.

Too much salt can also reflect a poor diet and lack of fresh foods. Excessive salt intake is often due to a high intake of processed, ready made or junk foods which have high quantities of salt to enhance flavour and act as a preservative. Individuals who eat these foods regularly will not realise the quantity of salt they are consuming and they will also become accustomed to the flavour and crave the taste.
